project statement
Tatreez is a centuries-old Palestinian embroidery tradition, historically used to signal a woman's village, family, and marital status through distinct regional patterns. After the Nakba in 1948, tatreez became something more: a portable archive of a homeland many could no longer return to, carried in exile.
This small series takes traditional tatreez motifs and arranges them into representations of the Palestinian flag itself. Tatreez has always been a mode of remembering, but it has also always been a mode of protest, and making these flags today, in community with Palestinian women in the diaspora, continues that lineage.
