project statement
Tatreez has always lived on the body. It was never meant only for museum walls or archival boxes. It was worn, washed, mended, and worn again. These wearables extend that tradition into my own closet: Intifada-era tatreez patterns embroidered directly onto a denim jacket and a pair of denim capris I already owned and wear regularly.
By placing these patterns onto everyday American clothing, I wanted to collapse the distance between "there" and "here," between a historical act of resistance under occupation and my own daily life in the diaspora. Wearing these pieces is a small, ongoing anti-memorial. Every time I put on this jacket, the resistance embedded in the stitches leaves the archive and reenters the present.
