Double Helix
24" x 24" x18"
Fired ceramics sculpture

My longstanding interest in the occult has taken many forms over the years. Pursuit of such “knowledge of the secret” has transported my mind and body throughout the world, keeping me open and voracious. Self-exposure to different spiritual and cultural ideas has given me a breadth of experience that I attempt to synthesize in my everyday life, and in my “arts”. The Martial Arts and Healing Arts attract me because of their parallels, paradoxes, and wisdom about the body. The imagery surrounding world religions and spiritual practices provides compelling insight and material. Sacred geometry, natural lines, organic patterns, and the figure provide structure and stage for my stories of exploration.
This piece addresses the boundaries that Western culture sets up between mind and body, and my active pursuit to expel them. By reading between the lines of pop culture, I would see that my body is my opponent: something that requires tight supervision and ritualistic punishment. It exists subordinately and separately, versus being integrated and balancing the mind and spirit. Therefore, this piece begins as skin, fat, muscle, and bone competing with each other for prominence. Yet evolution provides hope within this piece, as rival textures begin to flow, and separate forms begin to converge. The double helix shape is my personal call for reunification of all levels of being, in the most natural and fundamental of motions.
